Hand-Wash Station

What this unit is

A hand-wash station is a free-standing pedestal with a basin on each side, a foot pedal under each one, a fresh-water tank in the base and a separate gray-water tank that catches everything that goes down the drain. It is the unit food vendors, health inspectors and any crew handling materials will ask about first.

Worth knowing

Three things that decide the order

How it works

Step on the pedal and clean water runs; take your foot off and it stops, which is what keeps the tank going all weekend. Waste water drops into its own sealed tank rather than onto the ground — that separation is what makes it acceptable to health departments and to State Parks. Soap and paper towels are mounted on the pedestal and restocked at every service.

Where to put it

Beside the restrooms, not in front of them. A sink parked in the doorway of a unit blocks the door and creates a line that tangles with the one already there. Set it at the side or at the end of a bank, with a couple of feet of clear ground around it so two people can use it at once and nobody is standing in the walkway.

How many

One station covers roughly three restroom units. Food service changes that: if you have vendors handling unwrapped food, the health department will want a station within reach of each vendor row rather than one shared unit across the site. Say what the event is and we will work the count.

Asked and answered

About this unit

The questions that come up on nearly every call about it.

Is there a water line to connect, or is the station self-contained?
No. Fresh water is carried in the base and the waste goes into a separate tank inside the same unit. Nothing connects to anything on your site.
How many people can one station handle?
A weekend event of a few hundred people is comfortable on one station between services. Beyond that, or with food vendors involved, it is worth adding a second rather than pushing one.
Do the health inspectors accept these for food events?
Free-standing stations with separate fresh and gray tanks, soap and single-use towels are the standard provision at permitted food events in Orange County. Tell us how many vendor booths you have and where they sit and we will place enough of them.
Is it warm water?
Ambient. These are cold-water stations, which is normal for outdoor event and site use.
Will you send out a hand-wash station without any toilets on the order?
Yes, though it usually goes out alongside restroom units. Yards, workshops and roadwork crews do rent stations by themselves.
Where does the hand-wash station sit in relation to the units?
To the side, or at the end of the row — never directly in front of a door. Leave enough clear ground that two people can use it without standing in the line for the units.
