A mile and a bit of off-leash sand below a bluff — with about 234 parking spaces and a restroom count that a several-thousand-dog event outruns immediately.
What it is
Roughly 1.3 miles of Huntington City Beach along Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint Street and Goldenwest Street, where dogs may be off-leash on the sand — one of the few beaches in Southern California where that is true. The sand is City of Huntington Beach property overseen by the Marine Safety Division. The Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, a nonprofit funded entirely by donations, cleans and stewards it. So stewardship is genuinely split, but for permits the answer is the city, not the nonprofit. Open daily 5am to 10pm.
PCH frontage only. Three metered lots between Seapoint and Goldenwest total about 234 spaces — roughly 54 in the two northern Lower North Bluff lots and about 180 in the South Bluff lot, credit and debit only. The Seapoint crosswalk ramp is the north entrance, Lifeguard Station 22 the central access, Goldenwest the south entrance, with extra stairs at 17th and 20th. Free street parking on Seapoint near Harriett Wieder Regional Park fills early. The beach sits below a bluff, so the lot-to-sand drop is via ramps and stairs.
What happens here
SoCal Corgi Beach Day, run by So Cal Corgi Nation since 2012 and now drawing thousands of dogs and attendees per edition, is the big one — though sources disagree on the staging beach, with the organizer saying Dog Beach and the city's visitor material listing Huntington City Beach near the pier, so confirm before planning. Surf City Surf Dog, the dog-surfing competition once held here, appears dormant; the most recent listing we could find is 2021. Otherwise: rescue and adoption meetups, breed meetups (which the city permits above a certain size), charity dog walks, Preservation Society beach cleanups, and steady pet-brand photo and video shoots.
The practical part
The restrooms here are newly built and few, and there are no outdoor rinse showers in this stretch — those start south of the pier. A several-thousand-attendee dog event outruns that supply on arrival.
Units cannot practically go on the sand: the bluff, the ramps and the soft sand rule out truck access below the lots. Everything sits at lot and bluff level — the paved edges of the three bluff lots, the tops of the Seapoint and Goldenwest ramps, and the heads of the 17th and 20th Street stairs — with the accessible route running along pavement. With only 234 spaces, vendor vehicles compete with attendees, so drop-and-leave placement scheduled outside event hours is the only workable plan. No barbecues are allowed, and the nonprofit's model depends on waste being fully removed, so a serviced sealed-tank setup is what is expected.
City of Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division approval for dog-beach activities and meetups, plus a Community & Library Services special event permit for organized public events on the beach — ninety-day lead, insurance naming the city, tiered fees. Anything touching the PCH shoulder or a lane adds a Caltrans encroachment permit.
